Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) 36

1Have mercy upon us, O Lord God of all, and behold us:

ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς δέσποτα ὁ θεὸς πάντων καὶ ἐπίβλεψον καὶ ἐπίβαλε τὸν φόβον σου ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη (6741)

2And send thy fear upon all the nations that seek not after thee.

ἔπαρον τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπὶ ἔθνη ἀλλότρια καὶ ἰδέτωσαν τὴν δυναστείαν σου (6209)

3Lift up thy hand against the strange nations, and let them see thy power.

ὥσπερ ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ἡγιάσθης ἐν ἡμῖν οὕτως ἐνώπιον ἡμῶν μεγαλυνθείης ἐν αὐτοῖς (9933)

4As thou wast sanctified in us before them: so be thou magnified among them before us.

καὶ ἐπιγνώτωσάν σε καθάπερ καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐπέγνωμεν ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν θεὸς πλὴν σοῦ κύριε (7175)

5And let them know thee, as we have known thee, that there is no God but only thou, O God.

ἐγκαίνισον σημεῖα καὶ ἀλλοίωσον θαυμάσια δόξασον χεῖρα καὶ βραχίονα δεξιόν (4872)

6Shew new signs, and make other strange wonders: glorify thy hand and thy right arm, that they may set forth thy wondrous works.

ἔγειρον θυμὸν καὶ ἔκχεον ὀργήν ἔξαρον ἀντίδικον καὶ ἔκτριψον ἐχθρόν (4745)

7Raise up indignation, and pour out wrath: take away the adversary, and destroy the enemy.

σπεῦσον καιρὸν καὶ μνήσθητι ὁρκισμοῦ καὶ ἐκδιηγησάσθωσαν τὰ μεγαλεῖά σου (5438)

8Sake the time short, remember the covenant, and let them declare thy wonderful works.

ἐν ὀργῇ πυρὸς καταβρωθήτω ὁ σῳζόμενος καὶ οἱ κακοῦντες τὸν λαόν σου εὕροισαν ἀπώλειαν (9170)

9Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire; and let them perish that oppress the people.

σύντριψον κεφαλὰς ἀρχόντων ἐχθρῶν λεγόντων οὐκ ἔστιν πλὴν ἡμῶν (9601)

10Smite in sunder the heads of the rulers of the heathen, that say, There is none other but we.

συνάγαγε πάσας φυλὰς ιακωβ καὶ κατακληρονόμησον αὐτοὺς καθὼς ἀπ' ἀρχῆς (7569)

11Gather all the tribes of Jacob together, and inherit thou them, as from the beginning.

ἐλέησον λαόν κύριε κεκλημένον ἐπ' ὀνόματί σου καὶ ισραηλ ὃν πρωτογόνῳ ὡμοίωσας (7542)

12O Lord, have mercy upon the people that is called by thy name, and upon Israel, whom thou hast named thy firstborn.

οἰκτίρησον πόλιν ἁγιάσματός σου ιερουσαλημ τόπον καταπαύματός σου (6092)

13O be merciful unto Jerusalem, thy holy city, the place of thy rest.

πλῆσον σιων ἀρεταλογίας σου καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης σου τὸν λαόν σου (5832)

14Fill Sion with thine unspeakable oracles, and thy people with thy glory:

δὸς μαρτύριον τοῖς ἐν ἀρχῇ κτίσμασίν σου καὶ ἔγειρον προφητείας τὰς ἐπ' ὀνόματί σου (7535)

15Give testimony unto those that thou hast possessed from the beginning, and raise up prophets that have been in thy name.

δὸς μισθὸν τοῖς ὑπομένουσίν σε καὶ οἱ προφῆταί σου ἐμπιστευθήτωσαν (7071)

16Reward them that wait for thee, and let thy prophets be found faithful.

εἰσάκουσον κύριε δεήσεως τῶν ἱκετῶν σου κατὰ τὴν εὐλογίαν ααρων περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ σου (10125)

17O Lord, hear the prayer of thy servants, according to the blessing of Aaron over thy people, that all they which dwell upon the earth may know that thou art the Lord, the eternal God.

καὶ γνώσονται πάντες οἱ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὅτι κύριος εἶ ὁ θεὸς τῶν αἰώνων (7455)

18The belly devoureth all meats, yet is one meat better than another.

πᾶν βρῶμα φάγεται κοιλία ἔστιν δὲ βρῶμα βρώματος κάλλιον (5276)

19As the palate tasteth divers kinds of venison: so doth an heart of understanding false speeches.

φάρυγξ γεύεται βρώματα θήρας οὕτως καρδία συνετὴ λόγους ψευδεῖς (8316)

20A froward heart causeth heaviness: but a man of experience will recompense him.

καρδία στρεβλὴ δώσει λύπην καὶ ἄνθρωπος πολύπειρος ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ (7776)

21A woman will receive every man, yet is one daughter better than another.

πάντα ἄρρενα ἐπιδέξεται γυνή ἔστιν δὲ θυγάτηρ θυγατρὸς κρείσσων (5493)

22The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance, and a man loveth nothing better.

κάλλος γυναικὸς ἱλαρύνει πρόσωπον καὶ ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν ἐπιθυμίαν ἀνθρώπου ὑπεράγει (6828)

23If there be kindness, meekness, and comfort, in her tongue, then is not her husband like other men.

εἰ ἔστιν ἐπὶ γλώσσης αὐτῆς ἔλεος καὶ πραΰτης οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς καθ' υἱοὺς ἀνθρώπων (9648)

24He that getteth a wife beginneth a possession, a help like unto himself, and a pillar of rest.

ὁ κτώμενος γυναῖκα ἐνάρχεται κτήσεως βοηθὸν κατ' αὐτὸν καὶ στῦλον ἀναπαύσεως (8815)

25Where no hedge is, there the possession is spoiled: and he that hath no wife will wander up and down mourning.

οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν φραγμός διαρπαγήσεται κτῆμα καὶ οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν γυνή στενάξει πλανώμενος (7505)

26Who will trust a thief well appointed, that skippeth from city to city? so [who will believe] a man that hath no house, and lodgeth wheresoever the night taketh him?

τίς γὰρ πιστεύσει εὐζώνῳ λῃστῇ ἀφαλλομένῳ ἐκ πόλεως εἰς πόλιν (7624)
