And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

And after that again a king shall arise in the south part of the world, and shall hold rule a little space: in whose days the treasury shall fail because of the wages of the Roman soldiers, †so that the substance of all the aged shall be commanded (to be taken) and given to the king to distribute†.

Their evil harvest, shall a Roman king

Shall Roman Ares flash from many a spear;

Thy royal power unto the Roman king

Wars and sad cares; and Roman Ares shall

Shall shoot up like ears in the Roman wars;

And . . . Roman Ares Roman lord.

And . . . Roman Ares Roman lord.

And unto these again a Roman king

But when a Roman Ares shall destroy

A robber and a Roman not well known

The Roman people shall against his will
